大栗の家

夕 暮 れ か ら 、 朝 ま で

Fern's Mountain Table

Lunch feels a little different in the mountains

It is not something to hurry through.

It is time to gather around one table, notice the season and enjoy being together.

There is only one table in the house.

On the day you visit, we welcome only your group. There are no other guests.

You may hear birds in the garden.

The wind moving through the trees.

And, occasionally, the quiet sound of china touching china.

The food

There is no fixed menu.

We cook according to the season, using herbs from the garden, vegetables from nearby farms and whatever is at its best that day.

Lunch begins with a small seasonal drink, followed by:

  • A warm seasonal soup

  • A freshly baked savoury tartlet

  • A main course shaped by the season

  • A gentle homemade pudding

  • The house tea

Nothing is intended to be elaborate.

It is simply a lunch that belongs to this house.

After lunch

When the meal is over, there is no need to leave immediately.

Sit on the engawa and feel the breeze.

Walk through the garden.

Read a book.

Have another cup of tea.

Or do nothing at all.

We believe the quiet time after lunch is an important part of the experience.
